Whether to purchase antique or modern furniture?

This is a question I often get asked when in our interiors barn.

My answer is always you should buy what you like.

If the piece happens to be antique or modern doesn't matter as long as it complements the items, you already have in your home.

I think an interior which evolves over time is far better and becomes part of who we are rather than just going out and buying everything at once and from one particular shop.

For example:

We live in a 200-year-old cottage, but all our furniture and accessories are not antique (even though we sell antiques)!

Also, we haven't gone for small cottage furniture either.  We have bought the things we love, and they have fitted in perfectly.

In our dining room we have gone for a Danish large modern dining table with Danish mid-century style modern dining chairs. These are teamed with an Art Nouveau 1920's small table in the corner with a large vase which is new.

To the side, which you cannot see, there is a matching Danish sideboard, but it has antique figures adorning the top surface.

Add to these paintings on all four walls of different eras and there you have it.

A mixture of old and new and that's just the dining room!
